About Eastern Michigan University

 In 1849, the State of Michigan’s Senate and House of Representatives laid the groundwork for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School. The primary objectives of this institution were to provide education in the art of teaching, offer a solid foundation in common school education, and deliver instruction in areas such as the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry, and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has undergone growth and transformation to meet the evolving needs of society. Starting as a Normal School, it later became a College and eventually achieved University status. Throughout its history, EMU has educated numerous individuals from Michigan, across the nation, and around the globe.


Currently, the university serves a diverse student body of 23,000 individuals pursuing various degrees, including undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral, and certificate programs in the arts, sciences, and professional fields. The University offers more than 300 majors, minors, and concentrations through its Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health and Human Services, Technology, and the graduate school. Notably, Eastern Michigan University boasts an exceptional faculty, talented students, and accomplished alumni. This includes CEOs of major businesses, recipients of prestigious awards such as National Student Teacher of the Year and National Teacher of the Year, numerous Fulbright Scholars and Milken Family Foundation National Educators, as well as several Michigan Teachers of the Year.
